Delta Gov Candidate Condemns NDC Campaign Disruption

Chris Iyovwaye, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate in Delta State for the 2027 general elections, has called for an investigation into the disruption of an NDC campaign activity in Effurun.

Iyovwaye spoke about the incident during an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Monday, September 21, following the confrontation that occurred during an NDC mobilisation activity in the area.

According to the candidate, the campaign was intended to be a peaceful political engagement. He alleged that individuals believed to have been sponsored by members of another political party attempted to disrupt the activity. These allegations were made by Iyovwaye and have not been presented as independently established facts.

He further alleged that an individual was found with an AK-47 during the incident and that some NDC supporters sustained gunshot injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He called for the relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the reported violence.

Iyovwaye also raised concerns about the withdrawal of police personnel who had been accompanying the campaign procession. He said the party had notified the Inspector-General of Police, the Delta State Commissioner of Police and the relevant Divisional Police Officer before the campaign.

The candidate described the reported incident as a concern for political participation and called on authorities to ensure that candidates and political parties are able to conduct lawful activities without intimidation or violence.

His comments followed reports of a confrontation during an NDC mobilisation exercise in Effurun ahead of the 2027 elections. Delta State authorities separately said security agencies had been directed to investigate the incident and take appropriate action against anyone found culpable.
