Iyovwaye: Urhobo monarchs’ endorsement cannot override Deltans’ right to choose
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Chris Iyovwaye, said the endorsement of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori by Urhobo traditional rulers cannot override Deltans’ constitutional right to choose their governor at the ballot box.
Iyovwaye stated this while reacting to a communiqué by the Ukoko R’Ivie R’Urhobo, in which Urhobo traditional rulers expressed support for Oborevwori as the “sole candidate” of the Urhobo nation for the 2027 governorship election.
He said he respected the traditional rulers and the institutions they represent, but maintained that their role as custodians of Urhobo culture and traditions should be distinguished from constitutional authority.
According to him, the traditional rulers have the right to offer counsel and express their views, but the authority to elect the governor of Delta State rests with the electorate.
“An endorsement, no matter how dignified its source, cannot supersede or extinguish Deltans’ democratic right to choose their leaders,” he said.
